cmp criteria

Section Links: Cases for Petition : Participant Comments : Examination Dates : Additional Mulligan Concept Offerings

The NA-MCTA has recognized the need to identify physical therapists that are competent in both a didactic knowledge base and clinical/practical expertise in the Mulligan Concept. In brief, the CMP testing has both a didactic and manual skills examination. Upon successful completion of the examination process these clinicians will be recognized as Certified Mulligan Practitioners (CMP).

NOTE: Individuals who pass the CMP qualifying exam are NOT entitled to, nor are they recognized by the NA-MCTA to teach the Mulligan Concept.

Those eligible to apply for the CMP exam include: Physical Therapists, Medical Doctors, Osteopaths, and Chiropractors (Note: ATC, OT, PTA, and COTA are not eligible).

To be admitted to the CMP examination, applicants must have completed either of the following course sequences. Four Courses: USA curriculum year 2000 to current year:

1. MOBILIZATIONS WITH MOVEMENT, "NAGS", "SNAGS" AND MORE: INTRO COURSE*

2. MOBILIZATIONS WITH MOVEMENT, "NAGS", "SNAGS" AND MORE: UPPER QUADRANT

3. MOBILIZATIONS WITH MOVEMENT, "NAGS", "SNAGS" AND MORE: LOWER QUADRANT

4. MOBILIZATIONS WITH MOVEMENT, "NAGS", "SNAGS" AND MORE: ADVANCED / FOLLOW UP*

* The Introductory course is recommended but not required. Those whom have completed the UQ, LQ, and Follow Up courses are eligible to apply for the exam.

Courses: Past USA Curriculum under Brian Mulligan or other MCTA instructors prior to the year 2000:

1. MOBILIZATIONS WITH MOVEMENT, "NAGS", "SNAGS" AND MORE: INTRO COURSE

2. MOBILIZATIONS WITH MOVEMENT, "NAGS", "SNAGS" AND MORE: FOLLOW-UP COURSE

Clinical Experience with Mulligan Concept is highly recommended. It is the expectation of the NA-MCTA that individuals who have taken the recommended course work and have clinical experience with the Mulligan Concept should to be successful with the exam process. Clinicians who have taken only the Introductory course and Follow-up and who have not used Brian Mulligan’s 6th edition text as a clinical resource and guide for developing further understanding and skill in the Mulligan Concept may find the CMP credentialing exam challenging.

Cases for Petition

Applicants may petition for exemption from the basic course requirements. The NA-MCTA recognizes that recent changes in the structure of courses offered in the Mulligan Concept may preclude some individuals from meeting the current recommended course sequence & requirements for certification (see CMP requirements). In addition, the NA-MCTA recognizes that some clinicians with advanced or postgraduate training in manual therapy may be competent in the Mulligan Concept and may petition to sit for the CMP examination. This includes clinicians who may have taken Mulligan Concept course work outside of the USA. It is required that individuals who elect to obtain requirement exceptions explain in writing at the time of application to the CMP examination. Petitions should be submitted with the CMP application eight weeks prior to the examination date. Applicants will be notified if their petition is accepted within two weeks of receiving the petition. Should a petition be rejected the applicant will have their application fee returned.

Participant Comments about the CMP Certification Program

"...It was a wonderful experience for me. Studying for it really made me sharpen my skills and master the techniques that I use less frequently.... My patients have been very excited by the entire process and their treatment has definitely benefited from it....Thank you again for your encouragement and support......"
